Costa Rica Surfing

Costa Rica's beaches offer some of the best surfing and fishing in the world. Adventure travelers and avid surfers are drawn to Costa Rica's beaches in search of the exceptional curls. Professional tournaments are frequently held on Costa Rica's beaches, which attract masses of foreign surfers. Many locals are also starting to take part in the fun.

Both coastlines provide near perfect waves. However, a few select spots have earned a legendary recognition. Playa Naranjo also known ass Witch's Roch is located on Costa Rica's northern Pacific coast. Tucked deep in the wilderness area of Santa Rose National Park, Witches Rock is not easy to get to. This is perhaps the best spot Costa Rica has to offer and was made famous during the filming of the film Endless Summer. This coast has a few more break points, which are more easily accessible including Playa Tamarindo, Avellanas, and Playa Coyote.

The central Pacific coast offers some popular surfing spots that are close to San Jose. Coca Barranca, Jaco, and Quepos & Manuel Antonio offer easy access and a very popular. This spots have strong beach breaks and good waves but the surf can get rough. Just south, the beaches offer good lefts and rights but frequently have riptides. Located on the southern Pacific coast surfers often work their way down to Dominical, Drake Bay, and Pavones.

The Caribbean coast attracts a fewer number foreign surfers. However, the coastline offers its share of great waves. This area also boasts the best fishing in Costa Rica. In particular, Tortuguero is great for fishing, surfing, and turtle watching. Adventure surfers can work their way down the coast hitting the waves in Playa Bonita, Isla Uvita, Cahuita, Puerto Viejo, and Manzanillo.
